Ship settings
Game types
Various game types exist and each one may change the characteristics and loadout of your ship. There have been a variety of ship settings in the history of Subspace and the most popular are currently live in Subspace: Reloaded's playlists.
Which items you spawn with, which abilities your ship has, and how it moves and shoots all come from these settings, so the rest of the help describes how each system works rather than what any number is.
Queueing
Find a match
Click on Find match to open the matchmaking overlay and queue into any playlist.
You may also use the ?play command to enter queues via chat.
Leaving
Vote to forfeit
Leaving a match in progress results in an abandon and is poor conduct. Instead players should vote to forfeit using Esc then S, and if the team agrees the match ends and your team forfeits.
Statbox
The player list
The statbox lists everyone in the arena and is also a selector for some player-targeted actions. The player highlighted in it is:
- the recipient
/sends a private message to - the player Tab locks you onto as a spectator
- the teammate 7 attaches you to.
Page Up or Page Down adjusts who is selected in the statbox.
Spectating
Control the camera
While spectating, select a player in the statbox and press Tab to lock the camera onto them, and it follows them until you change it. The arrow keys release the lock and move the camera freely.
Chat
How to trash talk
With no prefix, a message is public and goes to everyone in the arena.
(none)- Public Everyone in the arena
nice shot '- Team Your frequency only
'coming to you //- Team Your frequency only
//coming to you /- Private The player selected in the statbox
/good game :name:- Private A player by name, without selecting them first
:Duelist[Bot]:good game ;n;- Channel Everyone in that chat channel, anywhere in the zone
;1;anyone up for a 2v2
/ goes to whoever is selected in the statbox, so it is the quick reply when you
already have them highlighted. :name: needs no selection.
;n; is the only one that reaches outside the arena, and the only one whose
audience you choose yourself — see Channels below.
Chat
Channels
A channel is a named room that reaches everyone currently in it, wherever they are in the zone. You get ten slots. Press Esc then C to open them: Enter names the highlighted slot, Del clears one, and the numbers are what you type to talk.
The same thing by command, if you prefer: ?chat=alliance, trades replaces
whatever you were in, so list them all at once. ?chat on its own shows what
you are in, and ?chat=- leaves everything.
Talk to one by its number: ;1;anyone up for a 2v2. The number is that channel's
place in your list, so the same channel can be a different number for someone else.
A bare ;hello goes to your first channel.
?chat also lists who is in each of your channels, up to ten names each. A
channel with nobody else in it is a channel nobody is listening to.
Nobody owns a channel and nobody can be removed from one — anyone who knows the name can join it, so treat a channel as public and pick a name you would not mind being guessed.
The server does not remember your channels. Your client sends the list when you log in, which means it lives in this browser rather than in your account: clearing site data loses it, and another device starts with none.
Banners
The picture by your name
A banner is a 12 × 8 image drawn beside your name and in the statbox. Press Esc then B and pick any image file — it is scaled down and reduced to the palette Subspace has always used for banners. It only shows in the classic view.
Change it while spectating; the server refuses a banner from a player in a ship, so one picked mid-flight appears the moment you next spectate.
Your banner follows you: the zone remembers the last one you picked and puts it back on at your next login, on any device. Your channel list does not — it lives in this browser only.
